Stevie’s Song
Stevie’s Song is a short documentary about the life of Stephen “Stevie” Mehlfuhrer and his family, and how their unwavering love and support helped Stevie navigate the challenges of living with profound autism. It was a journey fraught with abusive institutionalization and harm, until Stevie was able to achieve an independent life of freedom and dignity in the community near Flesherton, Ontario, until his passing at the age of 65, in 2023.
Woven into Stevie's story is a song co-written by his 93 year old dad, Ted Mehlfuhrer, and composer/songwriter Gregory Hoskins, which captures a father's love, regret, and longing for the son he and his late wife Olive and their daughter Linda valiantly supported to ensure he could have a meaningful, well lived life.
Produced and created by award-winning filmmakers Barri Cohen and Graeme Bachiu, the documentary was inspired by the inclusion work of Marilyn Dolmage and Jim Dolmage, and funded by Family Alliance Ontario, from money obtained in a landmark class action settlement against Huronia Regional Centre (Orillia Ontario).
